Should I Prorate My Trucks?

If you operate qualified vehicles in two or more jurisdictions, here's how to decide whether apportioned (prorate) registration makes sense for your fleet.

One of the most common questions we get from carriers is simple: do I actually need to prorate my trucks? The short answer is — it depends on where and how often you cross jurisdictional lines.

When you should prorate You should consider apportioned (IRP) registration if:

- You're based in an IRP member jurisdiction (every Canadian province and US state except Alaska, Hawaii, and DC). - You operate a qualified motor vehicle — generally over 26,000 lb GVW, or three or more axles regardless of weight. - You travel in two or more jurisdictions on a regular basis, not just once or twice a year.

If all three are true, IRP is almost always the right path. One apportioned plate covers you in every member jurisdiction you've declared, instead of buying separate trip permits each time you cross a border.

When you probably don't need to If you only leave your home jurisdiction occasionally — say, one or two trips a year — trip permits are usually cheaper and simpler than full apportioned registration. The break-even depends on your weight, your destinations, and how often you go.

Still not sure? That's what we're here for. Send us your vehicle details and a rough idea of where you run, and we'll tell you straight up whether prorating makes sense or whether trip permits will save you money this year.
